Critical Reasoning & Logic

Workshop within the framework of the graduate training program

December 14/15, 2017

Description: Scientists have to give arguments in many different contexts: In their publications, in grant applications, in lab meetings and in conference presentations. Nevertheless, the bases for strong and correct arguments are not always fully clear to them. Logic provides extremely helpful tools for scientists to develop their arguments in a coherent, well-structured and convincing way. The seminar gives an introduction to the most important concepts of logic: Premises and conclusions of arguments, validity and soundness of arguments, deductive vs. inductive reasoning, common types of inferences and fallacies. The idea of the seminar is to use these concepts as a toolbox which provides very useful techniques for everyday scientific work. The participants learn how to reconstruct arguments from scientific texts, how to give well-structured and logically valid arguments, and how to avoid misunderstandings. There are two main sets of exercises: One for written argumentation and one for oral argumentation.

Effective Visual Communication of Science

Workshop within the framework of the graduate training program

September 26/27, 2017

Description: Effective Visual Communication of Science is a 2-day workshop where participants learn how to visually communicate their complex research ideas and results. The workshop helps PhD students, postdocs, and also senior researchers grasp how our visual perception works. We learn the best practices of communication so our messages are effortlessly understood by any specific audience. We also discuss data visualizations, colors, typography, image file formats, and the knowledge is then applied to journal papers, project proposals, conference posters, and slide presentations. The workshop comprehensively addresses all aspects of visual communication that are necessary for scientists. The workshop is very interactive and we comment on examples from slides, posters, and papers, that participants send in advance. The principles are applied in an exercise where everybody draws a graphical abstract of their research and gets in-depth feedback.
